In France in 1944, during a bombing raid a sergeant, a corporal and three US soldiers are imprisoned in a cave.
To get out, they start digging but end up in an underground cave where, guarded by the German military, Hermann Göring's hidden treasure is kept.
Having killed the military, an elderly professor and a 15-year-old boy remain with them.
They resume digging, but one of them, Slater, at the sight of those riches shows signs of wanting to stay there and tries to convince the others to do the same.
Having discovered a projector and some obscene films, he starts to organise parties but constant inner conflicts arise between them.
When, having finished digging the tunnel, they open a way out, the aerial bombardment begins again and Slater tries to collapse the tunnel's scaffolding to keep them from leaving, but Gerfy, sacrificing his own life, gets the soldiers, the professor and the boy out into the open.
Slater, left alone inside the cave, now completely insane, claims that he can go it alone, without women but possessing the greatest wealth in the world.
Outside, however, the bombardment continues unabated.
